Focus Areas

Introduction

The Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project focuses on the following areas:

Increased access of health services for poor, disadvantaged, and tribal groups.

In particular, the project focuses on

  • checkmark Reducing maternal and neo-natal mortality rates in Tamilnadu,
  • checkmark Improving tribal health, and
  • checkmark Facilitating use of hospitals by underprivileged groups
Developing effective interventions to address key health challenges and thus combat diseases and accidents.

The Project's work in this area includes

  • checkmark Health promotion,
  • checkmark Creating awareness about non-communicable diseases and screening for those conditions, and
  • checkmark Preventing and treating accidents and other medical emergencies
Improving health outcomes and quality of service by strengthening management of the public sector health systems and by involving the non governmental sector.

Work in this focus area includes

  • checkmark Improved monitoring and evaluation using the platform provided by a custom-built HMIS,
  • checkmark Developing and disseminating protocols for standard treatment, and
  • checkmark Better regulating public and private health facilities
Increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the public sector hospital services at the district and sub-district levels.

The Project strives to achieves this by

  • checkmark Rationalising secondary care facilities,
  • checkmark Rationalising and maintaining hospital equipment,
  • checkmark Human resource planning and development, and
  • checkmark Strengthening hospital management.

Increasing Access

To increase access for tribals, women and the general population who do not have access to essential and life saving services, TNHSP has conceived and implements the following programmes:
